Stewardship Letter

“All things come from you, O Lord, and of your own do we give you.”

At our Dedication Festival on 6 October, St. James’ gave thanks for our Founders and Benefactors (who built our magnificent church with no little self-sacrifice), for faithful worshippers gone before us, and for the worship, witness and ministry of the parish over the past 138 years in what is now the Downtown Eastside.  So much for which to be thankful:  Fr. Clinton and Fr. Cooper on Skid Row, May Gutteridge and St. James’ Social Services, for example.

We celebrated too our ongoing worship and ministry:  the regular round of worship day by day, formation and Christian discipleship, our Guilds, the Street Outreach Initiative, Open Church, Coming Home Society, and Mothers’ Union to name but a few.  As we give thanks, so we ask God’s continued guidance and blessing, that these ministries may be sustained and developed.

It is costly to do all these things, financially and in “volunteer hours.”  To maintain our buildings and ministry currently costs some $1700 per day, over 50% of which now comes from our investments:  that still leaves some $800 per day to come from our giving.  Our Guilds and Ministries would all welcome new members/volunteers, say 1 or 2 hours per month.

With this letter you will find two forms, which you are invited to return in the envelope at Mass on Sunday 24 November when there will be a celebratory Parish Lunch (or post it to the Parish Office).  The first ( Intention form ) is to make your financial pledge, the second ( Time and talents ) is to request information on offering something of your time and talents.

I encourage you to consider prayerfully how you may best respond, remembering St. Paul’s saying that “God loves a cheerful giver.”  As God is so generous to us in the giving of Godself in Jesus Christ, and in the gift of life and love, so may we be generous in return.  In 2 Corinthians 9 St. Paul continues, “You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God.”

Regular monthly giving by PAD (Pre-Authorised Debit) or credit card is of great benefit to the parish in managing our regular income/expenditure.  The Trustees also hope that the St. James’ investment capital may be increased.  Information is available on legacy planning.

Thank you for your generosity to St. James’ in the past, and may God bless you and yours at this time of Stewardship Renewal.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Kevin
