National Indigenous Day was on Wednesday, so today we celebrate Aboriginal Prayer Sunday: we have the banner gifted to us by Elder Kelvin Bee in a place of honour in church, and insights from the wisdom and tradition of First Nations inform many of the prayers in our liturgy this week.
St James’ is committed to the ongoing journey of Truth and Reconciliation. We are indebted to the presence amongst us over the years of Indigenous Elders and Members who, graciously and patiently, encourage us to move forward together. Acknowledging with profound sorrow the part our Anglican Church has played in the oppression of Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, we seek to learn more of the riches of First Nations’ understanding of life, and to deepen our relationship with those on whose land we live and worship.
Indigenous and Settler together, let us give thanks to the Creator for one another, for the beauty and wonder of the creation, and for all the blessings of this life.
