Clergy Notes — Twenty-Second Sunday after Pentecost, October 29, 2023

This week marked the beginning of the annual Heart of the City Festival; a yearly series of events in the DTES spanning a broad range from music to theatre to cultural talks and everything in between. St. James’ is delighted to be participating once again this year. This past Wednesday we hosted our first event of the year: a historic tour of our church building and bell tower, followed by an open rehearsal of the marvelously talented Vancouver Cantata Singers.

For my part, being present the past two years at this event (we were unable to offer the tour during Covid) has been such a joy. There is so much rich history in our building, our neighbourhood, our community, and our parish. The tour, for me, always reminds me of the wonderful connections we hold between past and present; neighbourhood and church; structures and people. I am always grateful to be part of the team welcoming neighbours into our midst and hearing their stories; many of whom have memories of this place that far pre-date mine.

If you are in the neighbourhood over the next week or so, do check out some of the events on offer: https://www.heartofthecityfestival.com

St. James’ will be tolling the bell at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 2nd in memory of all those who have died in the past year. Then, at 6:30 pm, we shall have a Solemn Requiem Mass for All Souls. This is a great opportunity to invite someone new, to share with others the hope that we have in Christ, and to be a part of continuing those sacred connections into the future of St. James’ and the DTES.
